Chimpanzee

Trailer: Chimpanzee - Walt Disney Pictures

Wow! That's a whole lotta monkeys! Disney Nature is about to release "Chimpanzee," their latest nature documentary.

Not surprisingly, there are lots of shots of monkeys being, well, monkeys! The aerial photography looks great. The chimpanzee photography looks good, but fairly standard. A portion of first-week proceeds go to the Jane Goodall Foundation, which is good.

Looper

Trailer: Looper - Sony Pictures

Once again continuing the Science-Fiction theme! A trailer has been released for the upcoming September 28 release "Looper." The film stars Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as older and younger versions of the same character. The younger version is a hit man who kills off people sent 30 years back by those who want them to disappear. When his older self mysteriously appears, it sets up all kinds of complications!

The trailer has plenty of action, as you would expect. The time-travel concept is well worn, to say the least! So, for me, the film hinges on how compelling and how well done the story is. If the story is compelling and exciting, it could work very well. If it seems contrived, or asks for too much suspension of disbelief, it might not work as well. We will have the chance to see how it turns out in late summer.

Lockout

Trailer: Lockout - FilmDistrict/Europa Corp.

Continuing the Science-Fiction theme, one of this Friday's releases is "Lockout." When it was described as "'Die Hard' meets 'Blade Runner'" I had to say, "Count me in!" It could be fun, it could be completely silly! But, at least it's trying to be entertaining.

The trailer is fun, with lots of action, clever quips, and outer space battles! Doesn't that sound good? I have to say, I think so!

Total Recall

Trailer: Total Recall - Columbia Pictures

There is a new version of "Total Recall" coming out this summer. A variation on the Philip K. Dick short story "We Can Dream It for You Wholesale," this film is different in that there is no Mars. Instead, it focuses more on the blurred line between reality and fantasy. The trailer is pretty interesting!

This version is directed by Len Wiseman, who directed "Underworld" and "Live Free or Die Hard." I think he's pretty good. The fourth "Die Hard" film was so-so, but at least it was better than the third one! I personally love Science-Fiction. So, I am instantly drawn to this kind of film. But, we will see how this one goes!

Savages

Trailer: Savages - Universal Pictures

If you just can't get enough of the Mexican Drug War, today's Trailer Review is for Oliver Stone's new summer movie, "Savages." As you would expect, there's lots of violence, frenetic camera work and crazy editing! Lots of skeezy-looking young people beating others up and getting beaten up. Doesn't that sound like some real summer fun? Uh, okay, if that's your idea of summer fun!

Ted

Trailer: Ted - Universal Pictures

Today's trailer is for Seth MacFarlane's first movie, "Ted." It's about the relationship between Teddy Bear and boy. And, how that relationship continues into adulthood, where both bear and man are quite different, and as it turns out, R-rated!

MacFarlane is best known as the creator of the animated TV show "Family Guy." Personally, I think MacFarlane is funniest by himself. His show is pretty hit and miss, as you would expect when you have to crank out so many episodes per season.

The trailer itself is kind of funny. But, not all that funny. You get the premise, and the trailer doesn't show too much beyond that. Just the kind of jokes you would expect. The CGI bear is cool. But, that's thanks to the effects folks. I personally don't hold out too many expectations for this. But, hey, you might!

On the Road

Trailer: On the Road - YouTube/MK2 Films

For the first trailer I am posting and reviewing, I am going with "On the Road." This is the film based on the famous book by 1950's "Beat" author Jack Kerouac.

The story is a free-form account of several trips across America. Kerouac uses characters to represent himself and others in his life. The construction of the novel means that the screenwriter has to find a way to make the novel translate to the screen. On board this effort are Director Walter Salles and Screenwriter Jose Rivera. They both worked on "The Motorcycle Diaries," a very well-received road trip film.

This is the film I most look forward to this year! And, that is given the array of interesting films coming up! This trailer shows the lyrical feel that Salles gave his previous film. The cinematography looks beautiful. And, you can definitely get an idea of the atmosphere this film creates. I am very much looking forward to its release!

I will post my views, and you can post yours! Movie Trailers are an art all to themselves. They are meant to advertise a film. But, they have their own unique way of storytelling.
