White House Down - First Trailer!

Trailer: White House Down - Columbia Pictures

"Olympus Has Fallen" is currently a surprise hit at the box office! But, there is a rival White-House-under-attack movie. And, it's being brought to us by none other than our generation's Master of Disaster, Roland Emmerich! He brought us "Independence Day" and the hyper-disaster-epic "2012."

Before this, we only had a few still photos to work with. But, the first trailer gives us plenty of destruction, with only a hint of the Die-Hard-in-The-White-House plot that both this and "Olympus Has Fallen" feature.

I think it looks really cool! And, I even got a chill watching it. I think Emmerich's film is going to be the more visceral one, which is why we're going to see it during summer instead of during spring!

Budget Sequester Hits "Star Wars: Episode VII"

The budget sequester isn't only hitting Washington, it's hitting the film industry, including the upcoming "Star Wars: Episode VII." Producer Kathleen Kennedy explains:

"Yes, Yoda will be back, but he will be a sock puppet."
"You mean, an actual sock puppet? Just a sock with eyes glued to the top with a guy's hand inside?"
"Yes! Hey, we had to cut somewhere, 'kay?"
So this intrepid reporter had to ask, "What brand of socks will be used?"
"Fruit of the Loom. They were 4 pair for $5 at K-Mart."

Can't beat a deal like that!

Oblivion - New Trailer!

Trailer: Oblivion - Universal Pictures

I am very much a Science-Fiction fan! And, so, the thought of having a movie like "Oblivion" on the way is very heartening! But, it is directed by Joseph Kosinski, who directed "Tron: Legacy." I thought that movie was a real disappointment! So, even though the trailer for "Oblivion" looks pretty cool, I am cautious.

Tom Cruise is the headliner here. I have liked him when he's played more down-to-earth characters. And, when he was in "Born on the Fourth of July," I thought he was great! I know lots of people have problems with him because of his Scientology beliefs, etc. But, I only care about what he's doing on the screen. And, he looks to be doing a good job here in giving us a grounded character to follow through this story.

There are lots of effects (of course!), but an intriguing story line that could really work. Let's hope so! We will find out soon. "Oblivion" opens April 19.
